The Math Behind Bitcoin's 'Impossible' $1M Target Is Flawed: A Forensic Analysis

Regulation | CryptoSignal |

The market lies here. The claim that Bitcoin to $1M by 2030 is 'mathematically impossible' – made by Markus Thielen of 10x Research – is itself a textbook case of flawed arithmetic dressed up as authority. Let's trace the payload.

Context

Thielen’s argument, as reported in a sparse news flash, boils down to a simple calculation: to reach $1M per BTC, the market would need to absorb trillions of dollars of new capital. That number, he claims, is beyond reach. The original article lacks any detailed methodology, source data, or counterfactual analysis. It is a quote-driven snippet, not a research report. But the claim has circulated widely, feeding FUD among retail holders and providing ammunition to skeptics.

I’ve been tracing on-chain data since 2017 – auditing ICO whitepapers for cryptographic rigor, dissecting DeFi liquidity flows during the summer of 2020, and flagging the Terra collapse months before it happened. In every case, the market’s dominant narrative was built on a selective reading of numbers. Thielen’s argument is no different.

Core

The 'trillions of dollars' framing ignores three fundamental on-chain realities: lost coins, long-term holding behavior, and marginal pricing. Let’s examine each.

First, lost coins. Of the 19.5 million BTC mined to date, an estimated 3 to 4 million are permanently inaccessible – lost wallets, forgotten private keys, burned addresses. Chainalysis and Glassnode data suggest up to 20% of the circulating supply is effectively dead. That means the real available supply is closer to 15–16 million BTC. At $1M per coin, the implied market cap drops from $19.5T to $15.5T. Still large, but not the same universe.

Second, long-term holding. Bitcoin’s HODLer behavior is well-documented: wallets that have not moved coins in over 5 years now control roughly 28% of the supply. These coins are not traded; they are vaulted. The velocity of Bitcoin – the number of times a coin changes hands per year – has been declining steadily. In 2023, velocity was below 4, down from double digits in 2017. Low velocity means that price discovery is driven by a thin slice of the supply. The marginal buyer and seller, not the total stock, determine the price. Thielen’s model assumes all 21M coins must be revalued simultaneously. That’s not how markets work.

Third, marginal pricing. In any asset, the price is set by the last transaction, not the average. A $1M BTC could be achieved with far less than $1T of new money if the vast majority of coins are held by believers who refuse to sell. During the 2021 bull run, Bitcoin’s price rose from $10K to $64K on a net inflow of roughly $300B into the entire crypto market, not just Bitcoin. The multiplier effect of HODLer behavior amplifies price moves. Thielen’s 'trillions' is a straw man.

Let’s look at the data. On-chain UTXO age distribution shows that the proportion of coins held for 1+ year has remained above 60% for most of the past three years. Exchange balances have fallen from 3.2M BTC in 2020 to 2.4M BTC in 2025. These are not signs of a market that needs massive new capital to move. They are signs of a market where supply is shrinking relative to demand.

Contrarian

Here is the counter-intuitive angle: Thielen’s argument is not just wrong on the math – it is a manufactured narrative that serves a specific purpose. The claim that 'mathematically impossible' is a classic FUD vector used by those who want to position themselves as rational contrarians while selling their own products (10x Research sells subscription research). It is the same playbook used by VCs to push new 'solutions' to problems that don’t exist. I saw this during DeFi Summer: 'liquidity fragmentation' was a fake crisis to sell interoperability protocols. The same pattern repeats.

Correlation is not causation. The fact that Thielen’s model produces a trillions-dollar figure does not mean $1M is impossible. It means his model is too simplistic. The real mathematical impossibility is the assumption that all coins are in play and that price follows a linear capital-to-market-cap ratio. In reality, Bitcoin’s price is a chaotic function of sentiment, liquidity, and holder conviction. The data on long-term holder supply and exchange outflows suggests the opposite of his conclusion.

Takeaway

Next week, watch the velocity of coins older than 5 years. If it stays below 0.2, the marginal supply tightens further. The question is not whether $1M is mathematically possible – it’s whether the market will adopt the narrative that it is. The data doesn’t lie, but it can be misread. Wallets don’t lie, but their owners do. And in this case, the owner of the 'impossible' claim is selling a story, not a proof.
