Ripple’s $449M Stablecoin Mint: 99% Burned—But Here’s the Signal Nobody’s Reading

Price Analysis | CobieWolf |

Chasing the alpha until the trail goes cold

Hook

Ripple just minted $449 million of its new stablecoin RLUSD on XRP Ledger. Then 99% of it vanished. Yes, you read that right: $445 million burned in a single stroke. The headline screams failure. But the truth is far more nuanced—and far more revealing about the state of stablecoin demand in 2025.

This isn’t a token destruction event. It’s a supply calibration. The kind of thing that happens when a launch team overestimates the immediate appetite for a new dollar-pegged asset. But the scale? 99%? That’s a signal. And it’s one that most traders are going to misread completely.

I’ve been chasing these on-chain breadcrumbs since the first DeFi summer. This one has a story to tell.

Context

RLUSD is Ripple’s answer to USDC and USDT. Launched in December 2024 with a New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) trust charter, it’s a licensed, 1:1 dollar-backed stablecoin issued on both XRP Ledger (native IOU model) and Ethereum (ERC-20). The pitch: compliance-first, cross-border payment settlement via RippleNet.

But here’s the thing about stablecoin launches: the mint-and-burn cycle is the core mechanism. Issuers create coins when demand rises, and burn them when demand falls. The $449 million mint likely represented Ripple’s initial liquidity provision—seed capital for market makers, exchanges, and early partners. The subsequent 99% burn means those recipients returned almost all of it, swapping it back for dollars.

Why? Because the end users aren’t there yet. RLUSD is in a cold-start phase. The wallets are empty, the payment corridors are still being built, and the DeFi integrations are shallow.

Core

Let’s unpack the numbers. $449 million minted. $4.45 million left in circulation. That’s a 99% burn rate. In stablecoin land, this isn’t a death rattle—it’s a supply-demand mismatch at scale.

But the real story isn’t the burn. It’s where the remaining liquidity sits. The data shows an “Ethereum imbalance deepening.” That’s market speak for: RLUSD on Ethereum is absorbing most of the tiny float, while XRP Ledger—the native chain—is almost empty. This is a structural red flag.

Why? Because RLUSD’s entire value proposition is tied to the XRP Ledger ecosystem. If the stablecoin meant to power RippleNet’s settlement layer is instead sitting on Ethereum DeFi pools, the cross-chain strategy is already out of whack. The XRPL side becomes a ghost town for its own asset.

And here’s the kicker from my audit experience: cross-chain stablecoin supply management is deceptively hard. If the minting mechanism on Ethereum outpaces the XRPL side, you get arbitrage opportunities, but more importantly, you get concentration risk. If one Ethereum address holds a third of the float, that’s a single point of failure for peg stability.

This isn’t theoretical. I’ve seen similar patterns in DeFi summer 2020, where mismatched liquidity pools led to black swan de-pegs. The difference? Back then, the market was smaller. Now, with billions on the line, the consequences are amplified.

Contrarian Angle

Here’s the counter-intuitive take: The 99% burn is actually a sign of disciplined supply management, not incompetence. Ripple could have let the $449 million sit on the books, inflating their TVL metrics and creating a false sense of adoption. Instead, they burned it. That’s a signal of reserve integrity—they’re not trying to pump the numbers.

But the real blind spot is the Ethereum imbalance. The market is focused on the headline burn rate, assuming it’s a failure of RLUSD. The real story is that the demand is asymmetrically anchored to Ethereum, not XRPL. That means Ripple’s core thesis—that RLUSD will drive XRP Ledger utility—isn’t materializing. The stablecoin is becoming just another ERC-20 asset, losing its native network advantage.

And here’s the trap: most analysts will call this a “slow start” and move on. They’ll miss the fact that the cross-chain distribution is a leading indicator of where the real economic activity is headed. If RLUSD’s center of gravity stays on Ethereum, the XRP Ledger’s value proposition as a payment rail weakens.

Ripple’s $449M Stablecoin Mint: 99% Burned—But Here’s the Signal Nobody’s Reading

Takeaway

Watch the next 90 days. If Ripple announces a major RippleNet integration with real transaction volume, the burn rate narrative flips. If not, the Ethereum imbalance will metastasize into a liquidity trap. The smart money isn’t betting on the headline—it’s tracking the chain-level flows.

Where does the next mint come from? And on which chain? That’s the data point that will tell you if RLUSD is a future competitor or a footnote.
