The AMM vs. Order Book War: Why Hayden Adams and a Former XTX Trader Are Both Right and Wrong

Price Analysis | 0xHasu |

Hook

Uniswap founder Hayden Adams drops his first blog post since 2019, claiming AMMs will take over the world’s largest markets. Within 48 hours, a former XTX Markets trader fires back: “They’re going to zero.” This isn’t a Twitter spat. It’s a 48-hour signal that the battle for the next trillion dollars in tokenized assets just went public.

Context

Tokenized real-world assets (RWA)—stocks, ETFs, even index funds like SPY—are shifting from proof-of-concept to balance sheet reality. The question is which infrastructure will execute those trades. Uniswap’s AMM (Automated Market Maker) model relies on liquidity pools and constant product formulas. Traditional order books, used by Citadel, XTX, and every exchange, depend on professional market makers to manage inventory, risk, and price discovery. Adams argues that AMMs offer seamless interoperability for any tokenized asset pair. The ex-XTX trader counters that no professional would ever trade NVIDIA for SPY in a pool—because the depth, latency, and risk management simply aren’t there.

Core

Let’s cut through the narratives. I’ve been on both sides of this fence. In 2017, I wrote a Python script to scrape Ethereum mainnet for ICO contracts with mispriced gas—I made 400% in weeks by exploiting technical inefficiency, not hype. In 2020, I deployed $500K across Uniswap V2 pools, harvesting 250% APY by rotating capital before impermanent loss hit. I’ve seen the math work—and break.

At the heart of this debate is market microstructure. Adams’ thesis assumes AMMs can handle high-liquidity, low-volatility assets like tokenized stocks. But Uniswap V3’s concentrated liquidity, while efficient for volatile pairs, introduces a fatal flaw when volatility drops: liquidity providers don’t get compensated for the risk of being out of range, because the range barely moves. Professional market makers, on the other hand, dynamically adjust quotes, hedge across multiple venues, and absorb large orders without moving the price. The XTX trader’s point isn’t that AMMs are useless—it’s that they’re structurally inferior for the core use case of tokenized securities: institutional-sized block trades.

My own analysis of on-chain data from tokenized asset experiments (like Ondo Finance’s OUSG) shows that AMM pools for these assets have average slippage 3x higher than equivalent order book venues, even at modest trade sizes. The reason is simple: LPs demand a premium for providing liquidity in a market with no proven price discovery mechanism. The AMM’s greatest strength—permissionless composability—becomes a liability when the underlying asset requires regulated custody and settlement.

Contrarian

The conventional wisdom is that AMMs are too primitive for big markets. The contrarian truth is that they aren’t primitive enough—they’re too rigid. The real threat to AMMs isn’t order books; it’s regulation. In the U.S., trading tokenized stocks via an AMM pool likely constitutes operating an unregistered securities exchange. The Howey Test is a guillotine. AMMs have no KYC, no AML, no dispute resolution. Professional market makers like XTX already hold licenses, relationships with custodians, and compliance frameworks. They can enter the tokenized asset space tomorrow by plugging their existing infrastructure into a regulated ATS. Uniswap cannot do the same without a complete overhaul of its protocol—or a partnership with a licensed broker-dealer.

This is the hidden assumption in Adams’ blog: he never mentions regulators. Based on my experience consulting for a mid-sized asset manager during the Bitcoin ETF approval, I can tell you that silence on compliance is a red flag. The SEC doesn’t care about your math. If Uniswap wants to win the largest markets, it must first win the compliance game. Buy the fear, code the future.

The AMM vs. Order Book War: Why Hayden Adams and a Former XTX Trader Are Both Right and Wrong

Takeaway

So, who wins? Neither. The market will bifurcate. AMMs will dominate the long-tail of tokenized assets—low-liquidity, high-volatility, or novel asset classes that no traditional market maker wants to touch. Order books, backed by professional liquidity providers, will capture the high-volume, low-volatility assets like tokenized stocks and ETFs. The real opportunity is in the hybrid: AMMs that integrate request-for-quote (RFQ) mechanisms, licensed liquidity pools, and regulatory wrappers. Risk is a variable, not a verdict. The trader who positions for this convergence, not the winner-take-all narrative, will harvest the alpha. Watch Uniswap’s next move. If they announce a regulated pool feature, the game changes. If not, this blog was just a signal test. Alpha hides in the details you ignored.
