BitMart's Final Audit: Frozen Funds, Unpaid Salaries, and a Broken Trust Assumption

Partnerships | PlanBtoshi |
On August 17, the official Chinese-language account of BitMart issued a public statement. It was not a marketing campaign or a product update. It was a demand. The account demanded that the founder answer questions about frozen user funds and unpaid employee salaries. The deadline was set for August 19. Trading services were scheduled to stop on August 26. The final shutdown is planned for January 31, 2027. The data shows a platform in its death throes, not a technical glitch. This is a pure, classical failure of the centralized trust model. BitMart is a centralized exchange (CeFi). It operates a central order book and holds user assets in custody. Technologically, it is indistinguishable from Binance or Coinbase. The differentiation was never in the code; it was in the risk appetite of its user base. The core technical failure here is not a bug in the trading engine. It is the absence of a verifiable Proof of Reserves (PoR) mechanism. The Chinese account’s explicit demand for "evidence of wallets, assets, liabilities, and available reserves" is a de facto request for a PoR audit. BitMart never provided one. This is not an opinion. Code doesn’t lie; audits do. The lack of a transparent, verifiable on-chain proof is the foundational condition that allowed the freeze to happen. From a technical audit perspective, the situation is clear. A real-time, automated withdrawal system is the most basic technical requirement for an exchange. The prolonged inability for users to withdraw, coupled with unpaid salaries, points to a fundamental liquidity or solvency failure. This is not a server crash or a database migration issue. Based on my experience auditing similar platforms, when both users and employees are locked out, the backend cash flow is gone. The 2.5-year timeline for the final shutdown (from August 2024 to January 2027) suggests complex asset liquidation, likely involving corporate structures, trusts, or illiquid holdings, not a simple technical migration. Contrary to the narrative that this is a sad but isolated business failure, the contrarian angle is that BitMart is a textbook case of a systemic risk we have been ignoring. The DAO was a warning we ignored about smart contract logic. BitMart is a warning about the fragility of the centralized custodian. The real blind spot is not the liquidity of BitMart, but the market’s continued acceptance of exchanges that operate without transparent, real-time, on-chain proof of liabilities. The demand for a "repayment order, supervision arrangement, and possible independent audit" is a bankruptcy framework, not a financial reorganization. Trust is a bug, not a feature. The founder’s refusal to immediately publish a wallet address or a reserve report is the strongest signal. A liquid exchange would provide proof. A failing exchange provides a police report. The market impact is a relative positive for top-tier CEXs and DEXs. Users will migrate assets from BitMart to perceived safer havens like Binance, Coinbase, or non-custodial platforms. The real damage is the incremental erosion of trust in the entire CeFi model. The event is a stress test that the system is failing. Zero knowledge, maximum proof. The final takeaway is not about BitMart itself. It is about the next exchange that will face the same demand for a proof of reserves, and whether it will be prepared to provide one, or if it will also become a warning we choose to ignore.
