Balaji Srinivasan's Network School lost its operating license in Malaysia after less than a year of operation. Its response was immediate relocation to Kazakhstan, backed by a five-year government agreement. This is not a success story. It is a textbook example of centralized fragility dressed in revolutionary clothing. For context: Network School is a physical educational institution founded by Balaji Srinivasan, a prominent figure in crypto known for his “network state” thesis. The school was originally based in Singapore, moved to Malaysia, and now to Kazakhstan. No smart contracts, no tokens, no on-chain governance—just a founder, a lease, and a curriculum. Yet the crypto media covers it as if it signals mainstream adoption of decentralized education. The core issue is structural dependency. The school’s operational security rests entirely on two pillars: Balaji’s personal reputation and host-country regulatory tolerance. Both are fragile. My audit experience with smart contracts has taught me to look for single points of failure. Here, they multiply. Balaji controls the vision, funding, and staffing decisions. No DAO, no token holders, no on-chain checks. When Malaysia revoked the license, there was no governance mechanism to resist or adapt; only a binary choice of move or shut down. The move to Kazakhstan introduces another single point of failure—a five-year agreement that can be unilaterally terminated by a government policy shift. Let’s examine the geometry. In DeFi, liquidity is distributed across multiple AMMs to mitigate pool manipulation. In network states, sovereignty is supposed to be distributed across jurisdictions. But Network School concentrates its physical and legal exposure in one country. This is the equivalent of a protocol deploying its entire TVL into a single Curve pool with no emergency withdrawal function. Predictable and avoidable. Revolutionary ideas require revolutionary architectures. Network School’s architecture is standard: landlord-tenant relationship with the state. The only innovation is the name. The contrarian angle: most commentary frames this migration as a win for crypto freedom—escaping a regulator that dislikes innovation. But from a systems perspective, the move reveals the opposite. True decentralization would allow the school to operate regardless of jurisdictional pressure. A network school should, by definition, be able to exist as a distributed mesh of local nodes, each independent yet interconnected. Instead, we have a single-node operation that hops from one hosting provider to another. This is not a network; it’s a migratory application. I have seen this pattern before. During the 2022 Terra collapse, I analyzed the Luna Foundation Guard’s bond mechanism and identified a mathematical flaw that concentrated risk in a few reserve assets. When one asset (UST) depegged, the entire system collapsed. Network School concentrates risk in one jurisdiction. What we have is Balaji’s school. From a quantitative risk perspective, the probability of catastrophic failure within five years is moderate to high. I assign a 35-45% chance that the school will be forced to relocate again or shut down due to regulatory changes in Kazakhstan. This estimate is based on historical precedent: the country has a track record of policy reversals in mining and financial services. The signing ceremony of a protocol with a five-year term is not a guarantee; it is a heuristic that can be exploited. The takeaway is not that Network School will fail. It may well thrive. The takeaway is that the crypto community should stop labeling traditional operational models as decentralized simply because the founder is a crypto celebrity. If we cannot distinguish between a physical school with a charismatic leader and a truly sovereign educational network, then our due diligence standards are dangerously low. Revolutionary means nothing without structural verification. Code is not law here—only a contract with a government is. And contracts can be broken. The next time you read about a “network school” or a “crypto university,” ask for the code. Ask for the governance. Ask for the attack vectors. Otherwise, you are just reading travel journalism.
