The contrarian view is that Stacks is not a Layer 2. It is a fork of Bitcoin with a different consensus mechanism that merely checks in with the mainnet. By anchoring blocks to Bitcoin, Stacks inherits the security assumptions, but it also inherits the limitations. Bitcoin is slow. Stacks is slower because it must wait for Bitcoin confirmations to ensure finality. The trade-off for security is throughput. And in the world of DeFi, throughput is liquidity.

Consider the competitors. Rootstock (RSK) uses merged mining. It is compatible with Ethereum's EVM. Merlin Chain uses ZK-Rollups. Each has flaws. But Stacks has a unique flaw: the STX token.
