Headlines declared AI-driven structural demand for NAND and enterprise SSDs. But the on-chain data from decentralized storage networks tells a different story. The rally is built on a narrative that conflates raw hardware demand with the actual value accrual in blockchain infrastructure. The supply chain tells a different story.
Context: The rally covered SanDisk, Phison, Western Digital, SK Hynix, Micron, and Seagate. The rationale: AI workloads require exponentially more storage—checkpoints, logs, training data. Traditional storage players are repricing from cyclical to structural growth. SanDisk’s guidance, extending five years, is unprecedented for a sector accustomed to 4–6 quarter boom-bust cycles. Yet the blockchain storage ecosystem—Filecoin, Arweave, Storj—remained flat. The divergence is instructive. The market is pricing in a narrative that doesn’t match the on-chain data.

The market’s repricing of storage stocks from cyclical to AI structural is not wrong per se. But it is incomplete. The real beneficiary is the hardware layer, not the tokenized storage economy. The protocol’s entire thesis is flawed if it assumes hardware costs will decline linearly. They will not. The new NAND generations require massive CapEx, and the depreciation will keep unit costs high for years. Decentralized storage networks, which already operate on thin margins, will struggle to compete unless they pass costs to users—undermining their value proposition.
